THE BRIEF

I was commissioned by the Nature Conservancy to create a one-page illustration to accompany a 125-word story on the science of shells.

The illustrations were designed to create a dense wallpaper of shells and other sea life.
SHELLS + SEA LIFE

Botanicals were meant to show a selection of shells and sealife, focused on the Gulf Coast in order to narrow the scope. Including:

Shark's Eye
Scotch Bonnet
Florida Sand Dollar
Calico Crab Shell
Angulate Wentletrap
Fighting Conch
Lightning Whelk
Rose Petal Tellin
Calico Scallop
Florida Cone
Auger
Junonia
Sea Urchin Skeleton

COLOR CONSIDERATIONS

While a wide variety of shells and sea life were featured, it was important to find opportunities of color in shells that more traditionally appear white or light colored. By incorporating soft warm and cool tones into a palette that otherwise featured oranges, purples and golds, I was able to broaden the palette.
Initial colorway options:
ARTWORK CREATION

I illustrated all assets individually, final deliverables included full-page illustration and gastropod diagram.

Files were finalized in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator
