Several years ago, I illustrated a botanical drawing of California as a personal commission. In the years since, I have sold hundreds of prints of the California drawing, along with even more requests to continue the series.
Slowly, I am beginning to revisit the project.
Initially I intended to work alphabetically, as this project is estimated to take over 800 hours (and will likely take several years, as I'm only able to tackle it on the weekends and in-between client work.)
Of course, I couldn't let Wyoming fall yet again into the trap of last place. Instead, I decided on a lottery system, where I will re-shuffle the deck of remaining states before I begin each drawing.

Over the last two years I have had the opportunity to visit 45 states. And so, with each drawing, I would love to share a fond memory of that state.
Littleton, NH
In fall 2018, my husband and I found ourselves near White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire. It was our first time there and we were just planning on passing through. While route planning, I spotted highway 116: my favorite number. Just off of it was a town called Littleton which I found delightfully charming. I laughed and insisted we visit: I loved the tie-in to my handle, @littlepatterns, and could feel my lucky number calling to me.
We pulled into town and ended up staying for 4 days.
Everything felt like kismet. I was on deadline for an illustration project, and so each day I worked from the aptly named Inkwell Coffee & Tea House. Best of all, several dozen photographs of a dog were hanging in the cafe—a dachshund, my favorite breed—and to my complete amazement, the dog's name was Maggee.
